Conflict Resolution

SOLUTION

Helping parties through conflict requires time, attention and care. Conflicts  usually become entrenched because one or more party has become emotionally triggered, which automatically switches off their ability to reason. Collaboration and collective problem-solving becomes impossible when individuals have switched into defending- and protecting-mode.

Most of the work in a conflict resolution process occurs at the front-end. A face-to-face facilitated conversation, listening circle or mediation is usually the last step (if it happens at all). Putting the parties in a room together before they are ready introduces the risk of further harm.

Instead, we first work on creating the conditions of psychological safety for each party by getting to know them and what they need to feel safe enough to have some difficult conversations. We  work with each party individually to identify their emotions, reflect on what may lie beneath those emotions and perceptions, and make sense of what's really happening in the present moment.

There are many paths to resolution. We will work with you and the parties to determine the path that best suits the particular circumstances of the conflict and needs of the parties.

PROBLEM:

Too often, inter-personal conflicts distract organizations from productive work. Instances of poor communication, team dysfunction, and perceived slights can spin into full-blown crisis at lightening speed. Organizational leaders find themselves micro-managing relationships rather than growing the enterprise.

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there."

Shots of the tree mural were on a building  near the harbour in downtown Dartmouth. It's mostly painted over now.
